You meet. You marry. You have kids. That’s the way it always goes. Or is it? In Steppenwolf’s latest production, Another Marriage, veteran ensemble member Kate Arrington pivots into playwriting and examines this question in an intimate portrait of an ever-evolving relationship between two writers. “I’ve always written,” Arrington says of her writing debut. “The difference here is that I decided to finish. When I started to see [my mother’s] drastic decline from a particularly malicious disease, I knew I needed to finish because I wanted her to see it.” Although her mother (to whom the show is dedicated) never got the chance to see the finished product, Arrington takes comfort in the fact that many people who loved her are able to experience it.

Another Marriage explores the liabilities of falling in and out of love, with a cast— including celebrated film and TV star Judy Greer—who Arrington describes as actors with a lot of permission to do what they do best. “There is a specific style of acting that is native to Chicago and is grounded in permission and trust,” she says, adding that she wrote the play specifically for a Windy City audience. “I wanted to create a framework for that.” Through July 23, 1646 N.
