When it comes to fashion, few things are as recognizable as Burberry’s tartan plaid, a signature of the label for nearly a century. The challenge facing new Creative Director Riccardo Tisci: Make it feel new. Mission accomplished, says Chicago style queen Ikram Goldman. “The freshness of honoring the heritage of a brand while still inserting your own identity is such a hard task,” observes the River North boutique owner, “and Tisci has done it brilliantly.”
One standout from the collection is Tisci’s trenchcoat-esque check basketweave ribbon coat, which takes the DNA of the Burberry tartan plaid and turns it into something effortless, ultrachic and entirely of the moment. Enthuses Goldman, “The idea of taking a Burberry trench into crochet-land with this very modern weave—it’s just a very honorable way to inherit a collection, in addition to being absolutely couture. What I love is that he was able to take something so iconic and play with it, interpret it in his voice and create something you can wear every day as a fabulous fashion piece. It’s magical.” Price upon request, Ikram, 15 E. Huron St., 312.587.1000,
